Because it seems to have taken over the Super Mario 3 thread.
Which one is the best? Personally, I've never played any of the FF games because they've never seemed that engaging. I've played Kingdom Hearts II though, and it's from the same company. It just appealed more because the fighting style was more interesting than the FF turn based system.
And Tom #2, don't you dare start bitching about, "It's supposed to be the Final Fantasy." because that argument has been tried and failed many a time.

On the name, Final Fantasy was so called because it was Square's last-ditch attempt to pull them out of a financial hole back when they had just started out (a group of programmers had split from the parent to form their own company). 'Final' because it looked to be their last ever game, and 'Fantasy' as that was the type of game. Cue successful franchise.
Best game is hard to determine; of the older ones, IV was called the best while VI is the crowning moment of the whole 'old' style of knights and thieves and what-not when Amano still did character and monster designs.
VII and VIII go against each other because they're similar in character design and the technology themes. IX was a kind of codex for the entire series, especially the older games, while X marks voice-acting and a move into themes of nature, spiritualism, and environmentalism. XI was online, and XII is a continuation of some spin-offs, like FF Tactics and FF Tactics Advance.
In other words, they're all so different you just have to pick one. I'd say VII. Overrated as it is, and full of glaring errors and flaws, its got personal value to me 'cause it was the first epic game of that kind I came across. It's like books by the same author. You just have to experience them all and pick a favourite, not a 'best'.

Wait, Cati said we're part of her "party" and we've to meet her in George Square... When is this happening? I haven't missed it, have I?
I've got my potions all ready to go and everything....
And a dragon...
P.S. I have a Final Fantasy, but played it only to discover I can't get past the first bit cause I'm stuck on some kind of space ship... Go figure.

All I've gathered from this topic so far is that Stewart is a nerd, but I knew that already.

Hey, you've your Star Wars, I've my games. Leastwise I don't read fan-fiction about 'em.
And Becks, I've no idea what game you're taking about. Probably a bad dream you had. Or maybe you're not talking about 'final fantasies' in the context of computer games. In light of recent developments, this would not surprise me.
...
Did anyone remember to bring a few Esunas to the party? For the morning-after, I mean. Maybe a poisona materia or two. Or a remedy; those work (though they usually cost 1000gil a pop).
Yeah! Nerding it up!

My case probably isn't helped by the fact that my first thought upon discovering Red XIII's real name is "Nanaki" was, "Hey! That's an anagram of Anakin!"

So to keep this vaguely writers related...
Which of the games has the more compelling plot? Or at least, which one to avoid because of the poorly written plot with pathetic segues and nonsensical explain-aways?

final fantasy VII is still my favourite but XIII is coming a very close second! Both have awesome stories too. VIII was far too easy, you could do it with one character and at such low levels cause of the junction system; ultima and drain and you were sorted.

Do any of them actually match up to the sheer awesomeness of Kingdom Hearts I, though?
I don't care, because I just met Cid and had the strangest urge to make some GODDAMN TEA.

He-ey, tea?! Can I have some too? With lots of honey and sugar and, oh yeah, don't forget the lard!
Now to SIT MY ASS DOWN and to drink my GODDAMN TEA. While SMOKING. INDOORS.
Best plot? God. VII is rife with translation errors that were ironed out in the PC version. Best story might actually go to VI; world destroyed and the bad guy becoming God? Does that stop you gathering your scattered party members (about twelve of 'em) from the ashes and then marauding the bastard's stronghold via airship while learning about the virtues of peace, love, and whatever along the way? Course not. When has that ever made a difference.

lol love it! where did you get that comic strip? Also the best team for VII is cid cloud and yuffie controversial ! mainly cause they all have limit breaks that hit more than once. And plus if you ever use vincent you run the risk of having to put the controller down and cheer him on as he uses his limit break just as everyone else dies. (happened to me against the diamond weapon)
