A superhero movie based on a comic book. Oh yes, we've all seen those.
Weapons manufacturer gets kidnapped by Middle Easterns, it changes his out look on life (and gives him an artificial heart) and he becomes a superhero... basic plot outline.
I went into this movie with less enthusiasm than usual, expecting something pretty average and that I'd never want to buy or watch again.
But as I said to DK as we left the cinema:
I never thought a superhero movie could turn me on so much.
To much information, but it's true.
It's 45% the music. The soundtrack is phenomenal, and I want it. Right now. Brilliant.
It's 45% Robert Downey Jnr. whom I love with a passion and have ever since that one with Harrison Ford. Can't remember the movie, only him! God, he's one sexy man. He will be on my wall next year. Even with facial hair.
It's 10% the suit. When I first saw it, I thought, ewww, red and gold, how tacky, but there's still something about it.
As a literature student, I should really attempt to review this movie analytically instead of through sex.
Ok.
The graphics were pretty well done in my opinion. I'm a stickler on graphics. Spiderman pisses me off because it's just so easy to tell what's graphics and what's real. I like that despite the technology being, not futuristic, but y'ano what I mean, it could still be real(ish).
There aren't many memorable lines, in fact, I remember none right now. But really, there weren't many lines at all. I would count this as a good thing, because often its the script that lets movie's like this down. Cheesy lines and so forth.
Acting... hmm...
Gwyneth (sp?) Paltrow was surprisingly less annoying than I expected. Her character was quirky and empowered, and it came off really well. The only issue I had was her blowing up things while wearing stilletos, but I guess that's what PA's to important people wear.
Jeff Bridges... what can I say? Interesting. Actually didn't recognise him. I haven't seen him in much else, so I can't compare, but his character was brilliant and he pulled it off really well.
And, hehe, Robert Downey Jnr... He does deadpan really well, and I think it really worked with this movie. Some might say he just can't act, but I thought that about Clive Owen, and people loved him. And yeah, yum!
Action/ fights. Well done. Comical in places and very serious in others (see Politics). Awesome to watch in places.
Politics. I can see this film being called out as "anti-Middle-Eastern propaganda", and you can definately see why when you watch it. But 300 was called anti-Middle-Eastern propaganda as well. It could also been seen as conspiracy mongering, but I don't want to give too much away.
Having not read the comics, I cannot compare or complain in that respect.
I would definately recommend it.
