www.imdb.com/title/tt0098663/This! This is the movie I was trying to talk about in Muse earlier! "A 90 minute commercial for Super Mario Brothers 3". Apparently it was made in 1989. I should've tried to find a copy of it for 80s Night. But it can totally be part of "Movies Inspired By Video Games (But Not Actually Video Game Adaptations) Night". ... we may need a shorter name for that.

For such a night:
-) Street Fighter (either live action or the animations) -) Resident Evil (bad as they are) -) Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within -) Silent Hill -) Super Mario Bros (which is awesome; deserves cult status) -) Doom (probably terrible) -) The Lawnmower Man (Awesome) -) Tron (JEFF BRIDGES) -) Whatever you can find online for animes/etc based on games. -) Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children -) Death Race (based vaguely on Rock n' Roll Racing) -) I forget

Dude, were you not paying attention to the part where I said not video game adaptations? Shhh.
The list Pete and I came up with:
-Gamer -Tron -Scott Pilgrim -The Last Starfighter -Toy Story 2
(Obviously the vital inclusion of Scott Pilgrim means this can't happen until that's out on DVD, but we like to plan ahead.)

There's also the vital inclusion of Tron Legacy, which won't be out on DVD until after Scott Pilgrim.

Doom falls into the 'bad enough to be funny' category. But there's a minute or two where it actually goes into first person shooting, and that is awesome.
FYI? Lawnmower Man ain't based on or inspired by video games, despite the virtual reality thing; it's an adaptation of a Stephen King short story... which, uh, it doesn't actually have anything in common with except the title. So yeah. ^^;;

Maybe we could make an exception for Doom since the director takes direct inspiration from videogames. Besides, I played the original Doom, I don't remember it having a plot. Any movie bearing the same name could be argued to have nothing to do with the actual game.

The plot to Doom was that you (The nameless Space Marine) are sent to a lonely Mars moon outpost after killing/disagreeing with your superior officer over killing civilians (or something). Meanwhile, scientists invent a teleporter with one end being on Deimos, the other end being on that other Martian moon. They chuck stuff through but then it stops coming out the other end so they send some people in who're butchered. Then the legions of Hell/Alien Invasion (depends who you ask) come through the teleporter, kill everything, and communications go down.
The base the Marine is stationed with gets sent in to investigate. The team leader gives him a pistol and orders to secure the perimeter while the rest of them go inside the complex with all the good gear. Over the radio he hears their death cries as they are torn apart. He then decides to head in and get the job done himself.
This is, essentially, the plot to Doom. After getting through the first set of levels, Earth Command pinpoint the source of the alien/hell-spawn invasion and send you in again. That bullshit about pet rabbits was added later, as a joke. There was another ending in one of the games where the Marine instructs his grandkids to put a shotgun in his coffin 'cause when he gets to Hell he'll want to do some cleaning up.

That... That's actually better scripted than most modern computer games. Stupid memory, always giving up on the good stuff.

On the subject of modern computer games, the beta of the RPG I'm making is 90% complete; there's a Story Test mode (The opening section of the game) and a Battle Test mode. There'll also be a seperate download ZIP folder with a RP-based sojourn into the digital world if I can patch one together.

If you hurry up and finish then we could make a film based on whatever it's about and watch that...

Again, missing the point of "Movies Inspired By Video Games (But Not Actually Video Game Adaptations) Night".
Key words being "Inspired By", "Not Actually" and "Adaptations".

That's what I meant by "based on"...

That would make it an adaptation.
However, make a movie where a bunch of geeks form an unlikely friendship through RPG's and you might have something. You could call it Dungeons & Breakfast Club, or something like that.
