The Edinburgh Filmhouse (on Lothian Road if you guys know Edinburgh at all) is in the middle of an Introduction to European Cinema. They are showing Metropolis and Buñuel and Dali's short film about slicing up eyeballs! You know it's good!
I guess if you like films and you like reading at the cinema and you like being all snooty and cultured you should check it out, although they are showing on Tuesdays. Not that I'm encouraging we should skip any wonderful meetings or anything.
Let's talk foreign films that make us feel pretentious!
Basically if Jean Luc Godard made it, it is awesome and worth watching.

Well I shall respond to myself.
I was looking up Un Chien Andalou so as to be prepared for just how uncomfortable the showing on Tuesday could make me feel. I can't shut my eyes considering how long I've wanted to see this film you see. And then I found this:
"Given the general French public's distaste for surrealism, Buñuel and Dalí carried sacks of rocks in their pockets on opening night as self-defense, expecting a negative response from the audience. They were disappointed when the audience enjoyed the film, making the evening "less exciting", according to Dali."
Fuck. Yes.

I love Dali so much. He can twiddle his mustache at me any day.
I saw two of his films at the exhibition at the Tate last year. One involved a man licking the toes of a statue, the other was a woman almost being raped and jamming the rapists hand in a door, and the hand was covered in ants! This is because the ants represent the loneliness, and the girl was lonely for being raped. Ants featured primarily in Dali's earlier work, often working together to make the shape of a vagina.
I shit you not.
I also got to see a section of his film that he did with Hitchcock, the whole extended dream sequence thing. It was creepy and weird and oh so very wonderful.
