Vinny swung his legs over the table to get up and instantly groaned. "Another back injury. Great," he muttered, then turned to the doctor. "Yeah, thanks doc, but I need to go find food, alcohol and something small and fluffy to kick then feed to my attack dog." With that, he slipped his shades and hat on and slowly headed out into town, vaguely in the direction of the Dying Swan Club.

The butcher grumbles about this and shakes his head. You pay for the joint (25g) and then peruse the inventory.
Butcher's Comestibles -) 150g: Prime T-bone steak (Grants Perk; only one in stock) -) 10g: Veal Cut (Negates next injury) -) 15g: Bacon (Blanka Only; +1R for next roll) -) 30g: Breakfast Pack (Boosts party's SM +1. Can only be used in the morning.) -) 5g: Leftovers (Grants Perk; limitless stock) ***
~~Pete~~
[Speech Check] Pete: 11 SM: 3 (+1) Target: 9 [Success]
You march out the door and head for the adventurer's lodge. A few hours later, a messenger appears and finds you sitting in the lounge with a drink and a newspaper in front of the unlit fire. He delivers the apologies of Alfonse, who is a kind of lieutenant for the neighbourhood watch-cum-militia and then gives you a letter, containing a formal invite for yourself and your friends to the town hall, where the mayor of Nou Havre would like to meet you all tonight. The messenger hangs around, and asks you if you want a reply sent to either Alfonse or the mayor. What do you do? ***

"Hmm, I suppose an apology is a good start. Tell the Mayor that I will discuss this with my colleagues." I then fix the messenger with a steely glance, "However, if we do decide to accept this audience, it is not a guarantee that we will offer assistance. It all rests on what the mayor proposes."
I then wait for the messenger to leave. Once he's gone I make my way to the Doctor's office to locate the others. I also work out what we will ask to be paid for helping the mayor. It's a big number.

Paid work would mean we can get some nice grub for a change...
"I'd like the T-bone steak my good man, except I can't stretch to your asking price. It's good meat, I have no illusions there, but I'm buying it for a friend of mine who was injured on the ferry crossing. He was badly wounded in the process of saving dozens of lives, and a good meal would certainly aid his recovery. So how about you give me the T-bone steak for a little less to help a hero mend his many wounds?"
Bartar speech check roll: 16

[Barter] Starlong: 16 SM: 5 (Politician doesn't apply to bartering anymore) Target: 6 [Epic Fail]
Oh, Baby! The butcher, already seething from having an animal in his establishment (he's allergic to dogs, see) has now decided that he has had enough of outsiders to last him a lifetime. He grabs his cleavers and a bandoleer of onions before somersaulting up over the counter to do battle!
[Boss!] Name: Gastrovo Job: Commando Chef
-) Ability 1: X-Cleave: Target must roll a check. If it is failed, instant death occurs; SM: 2. -) Ability 2: Onion Fall: Target is inflicted with teary eyes, reducing R on all rolls by 1.
Perks -) Toughness: This character can survive one fatal outcome per chapter. -) Culinarian: This character can produce stat-boosting meals out of basic ingredients. A roll check is required for each cooking attempt, as is the necessary tools (campfire, stove, etc). -) Melee Maestro(1): This character is proficient with melee weapons and gains a +1 boost to SM when using them.
Remember, if you beat him you get one of his perks (I determine it by rolling a dice, so its random which one).
First move's yours, what do you do?

... WHY?!?
Have I ever passed a speech check? And how come everytime I get a perfect "Just Shoot 'em" moment, the target is someone my charactor wouldn't kill. I just need to 'beat' this boss to earn a perk, so I don't have to kill him? Good.
I bring out my whip and feint that I'm striking for his face when I'm actually going to trip him up. I whip his ankle and throw him to the ground.
Roll: 11
(That X-Cleave perk seems seriously overpowered by the way, it gives me a 35% chance of surviving: not good...)

I know, the SM was set from his perspective (his SM using the move is 2). So...your SM for dodging it is '8'. Sorry about the confusion.
So, let's see:
[Whippersnapper] Starlong: 11 SM: 5 (-1; because of melee maestro) Target: 6 [Meh]
You feint for the face but then go for the legs to try and trip up this culinary colossus. You only succeed in making Gastrovo stumble and his back hits the glass shop door, which cracks. He looks round at the damage, and when he looks back at you his face is quite purple, like an evil storm. He takes an onion and, with lightning speed, peels and chops it. He then does it to another onion. Then another. Then another! You begin to feel your eyes sting and the fumes of onion catch in your throat. You have been inflicted with a -1R penalty, as has Blanka.
Speaking of which, its time he got involved, don't you think? By the way, when Blanka fights at your side you gain +1SM. You should really re-check his stats in the stat-tracker; all that 'passcode' business has been dispensed with. You can order him to attack or hang back, just remember that there's a roll check to pass when ordering Blanka around.

Did Blanka's +2R speech bonus count for my roll above?
Alright, I fall back to blanka and run a hand down his back, gathering up a clump of fur,
"Knock him down, Blanka!" I command and then side by side we charge at Gastrovo. My goal here, with Blanka causing him to lose balance and control, is to smear the clump of fur in his eyes: an eye sting for an eye sting, as it were, and with his allergies it could completely blind him maybe...
Blanka command roll: 12 Hairy eye roll: 4

Nope, 'cause you have to activate these things.
[Blanka Command Check] Starlong: 12 (-1R) SM: 5 (+2) Target: 10 [Success]
[Blank Take-Down] Blanka: 1 (-1R) SM: 5 Target: 7 [Fail]
[Hairy Eye-Roll (With who's fur? You expect him to be happy about that?)] Starlong: 4 (-1R) SM: 2 (+2) Target: 9 [Fail]
It's a disaster. Gastrovo boots Blanka in the muzzle then takes your hesitation as an opportunity to activate his X-Cleave.
[X-Cleave Check] Starlong SM: 8 (+2)

[X-Cleave Check] Starlong: 11 (-1R) SM: 8 (+2) Target: 12 [Success]
The two cleavers go sailing by your face and you take a step back. You feel your foot slip away on something loose, onion peelings, and almost cartwheel as you fall to the floor. Your boot, on the other hand, goes arcing upwards and catches Gastrovo clean in the jaw. He is lifted from his feet and goes crashing through the glass door. The two of you lie prone for a while then get up at the same time.
"Well fought, outsider!" grumbles Gastrovo, picking bits of glass out of himself. "We'll call it a draw. And to show there's no hard feelings, a 10% discount on all my wares. What do you say?"
Well? What DO you say?

"You're a tough negotiator my friend, and a fine butcher, in both senses of the word."
I take the Prime T-bone steak, one veal cut and four packs of leftovers. I hand over the 162 gold.
"Come on Blanka!" I say, before he decides he wants to enter round two.
We head back to the adventurer's lodge, and I see Blanka has a place to rest. Where is everyone else at this time?

I'm about to leave the adventurer's lodge when I bump into you. We swap stories whilst taking care of Blanka. I then suggest we find Vinny, quick. Trouble lurks round every corner of this place, and Gods forbid he should run into the "vigilante".

Vinny might be a while. (Haven't heard a word from him for a few days) so it might be prudent to leave a message at the Lodge's reception desk and carry on.
Also, watch your item capacity. It's starting to reach its limit (you'll have to start ditching or selling soon).
